Jiles wrote a beautiful, lovely, horrific revenge story set in the perfect time and circumstance, and with the most appropriate of endings. I would have followed the chivalrous, but also pugilistic Chenneville on his horse (with dog in tow!) anywhere. One of my favorite reads of the year. Very well-done.
