Lehane’s tome about a tumultuous Boston in 1918-1919 is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve read — a book about how good people deal with very small men and their outsized issues, of cognitive dissonance and dissidence to the mores of the time. Tour-de-force is cliche, but Lehane’s well-researched book that brings the Boston of that time alive is very much one.
